Sustainable Wins in 2025
As the year wraps up, 2025 has brought hopeful environmental stories that remind us progress is possible. Among the most uplifting is the comeback of green sea turtles. After over 40 years on the endangered species list, these majestic creatures have been reclassified from “endangered” to “least concern,” thanks to decades of marine conservation efforts. Their resurgence is a testament to the power of sustained environmental protection.
Another major win for the planet is solar power’s record-breaking rise. In 2024, solar energy became the top source of electricity generation in the EU, surpassing coal for the first time. This milestone signals a significant shift toward cleaner, renewable energy, underscoring solar’s role in combating climate change.
These stories, along with others like the growth of solar farms aiding bumblebee populations and the global push for more sustainable energy practices, show that there’s still hope for the planet. While challenges remain, the continued strides in conservation and renewable energy offer reasons for optimism as we move forward in 2025.

Sunset of the Day in Costa Rica
The Canopy reader Geneviève shared this serene sunset from Cahuita on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, where the colors in the sky light up the horizon even without the ocean in view. The soft pastel hues create a tranquil and welcoming scene, framed by the lush greenery of the tropical forest.
Thank you to Geneviève for bringing us along to this peaceful moment. Have a sunset or snapshot you’d love to share? We’d love to see it. Send it our way for a chance to be featured in The Canopy.

Avoid waste: Plan purchases carefully, reducing food waste and excess packaging.
Walk or bike more: Short trips are perfect for reducing your carbon footprint.
Start recycling: Proper recycling is easy and reduces household waste.
Plant native plants: Choose plants that thrive naturally, supporting local ecosystems.
Waste less food: Store produce properly and use leftovers creatively.
Compost food scraps: Reduce methane emissions while enriching your garden soil.
Consume less energy: Use energy-efficient appliances and be mindful of heating/cooling settings.
Upcycle items: Give new life to old items and reduce waste.
Cut single-use plastics: Carry reusable items and choose minimal packaging.
Spend time in nature: Connect with nature, boosting both health and well-being.
By making small, consistent changes, you can step into 2026 with a mindset that’s not only good for you but great for the planet.
