More Than 1500 Brands Worldwide Have Said No To Fur Fashion

The fashion industry is experiencing a monumental shift as over 1500 brands worldwide have committed to going fur-free. Once a symbol of luxury, fur is now widely seen as unethical, with high-end brands leading the charge toward more humane fashion choices.

Big names like Ralph Lauren, Armani, Gucci, Burberry, Chanel, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, and Prada have all made significant strides by abandoning fur. Notably, Stella McCartney has never used fur since its launch in 2001, proving that success in fashion doesn't require animal cruelty.

Despite the growing fur-free trend, some brands like Dior, Chloe, and Louis Vuitton continue to use fur, a practice that seems increasingly out of touch with public opinion. In fact, according to the Fur Free Alliance, most citizens in North America and Europe oppose fur fashion.

However, it’s essential to also recognize that fur-free doesn’t necessarily mean cruelty-free. Many brands still use leather and other animal products with varying levels of animal welfare. The ultimate goal for truly ethical fashion might be to eliminate all animal products, following the example set by Stella McCartney and other sustainable brands.

As the fashion industry evolves, we hope more brands take this compassionate path, making animal cruelty in fashion a thing of the past.

France Will Pay People To Repair Clothes And Shoes

In a groundbreaking move to reduce waste, France is launching a "repair bonus" program to incentivize people to mend their clothes and shoes rather than throw them away. Starting in October, French residents can receive between €6 and €25 for repairing items at participating workshops and cobblers.

This initiative is part of France's larger effort to combat textile waste, with an estimated 700,000 tons of clothing discarded annually, much of it ending up in landfills. The government has allocated €154 million over the next five years to fund the initiative.

Bérangère Couillard, France’s secretary of state for ecology, announced the initiative at a responsible fashion hub in Paris. She emphasized the dual goals of supporting repair businesses and creating jobs. The program, managed by the eco-organization Refashion, invites all sewing workshops and shoemakers to participate.

Refashion’s mission is broader than just repairs; it also aims to reduce textile consumption and promote recycling. In France, the average person buys about 10.5 kilograms of textiles each year. By encouraging repairs, France hopes to cut down on the environmental impact of fast fashion.

This repair bonus scheme aligns with France’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainability. Measures already in place include incentives for repairing household appliances, bans on supermarkets destroying unsold food, and new regulations on plastic use and the repairability of goods.

By incentivizing repairs and transparency, France is taking significant steps to reduce waste and protect the environment. Cheers to France for leading the way in sustainable living!
