A Global Win for the Ozone Layer
If you’ve ever worried about the state of the planet, here’s a story worth holding onto. The ozone layer, a thin shield high in the atmosphere, protects us from harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun. In the 1980s, scientists discovered that chemicals used in things like old refrigerators and aerosol sprays were damaging it. Countries listened. Through the Montreal Protocol in 1987, nations agreed to phase out those harmful substances.
And it worked. Today, ozone-destroying chemicals have been nearly eliminated worldwide. Scientists project the ozone layer could return to its pre-1980 levels by the middle of this century. That recovery helps prevent skin cancer, protects crops, and safeguards ocean life that depends on balanced sunlight.
The work hasn’t stopped. In 2016, countries expanded the agreement to reduce newer chemicals that warm the planet. If fully carried out, those efforts could avoid up to 0.5°C of global temperature rise. It’s a hopeful reminder that when science guides action, and people work together, real healing is possible.

How to Design a Winter Plant Corner
When winter feels gray and endless, a small plant corner can make a real difference. It’s not just about keeping houseplants alive. It’s about creating one bright, living spot in your home that feels calm and restorative. A south- or west-facing window is ideal, and if natural light is limited, full-spectrum LED grow lights can help keep both plants and spirits lifted. Even something simple like cleaning your windows can let in more of that valuable winter sun.
Dry indoor air is another winter challenge. Grouping plants together creates a small humid microclimate, and pebble trays can add moisture for smaller pots. A compact humidifier is often the most reliable solution, helping tropical plants thrive while easing dry skin and sinuses.
Finally, think beyond rows of pots. Layer plants by height, use odd-number groupings, and mix textures like terra-cotta and woven baskets. Add a cozy chair, a soft throw, and warm layered lighting. The result is a small, green retreat that makes the darker months feel softer and more hopeful.

Make Your Daily Coffee More Planet-Friendly
For many of us, coffee is nonnegotiable. It’s the quiet moment before emails, school drop-offs, or a busy workday. But like most daily habits, our coffee routine has an environmental footprint, from packaging and energy use to what we pour into our cup.
A few small swaps can make a difference. If you use capsules, look for recyclable options and follow through by actually returning or recycling them. Choose an energy-efficient machine and turn it off when you’re done brewing. It’s a simple habit that adds up over time. Reusable mugs and cups also cut down on single-use waste, especially if you grab coffee on the go.
Even your milk choice matters. Plant-based options like oat or soy milk often require less water and produce fewer emissions than dairy. None of these steps needs to be perfect. But taken together, they make your daily cup feel a little lighter on the planet, and that’s a good way to start the day.
