A Low-Waste Mother’s Day Brunch Guide

Mother’s Day falls on May 12 this year, and if you’re planning to celebrate with brunch, why not make it a little easier on the planet, too? With a few small swaps, you can create a cozy, low-waste gathering that still feels full of love.

Skip the plastic plates and paper napkins and go with the real stuff. It feels more personal anyway. If you're short on dishes, borrow a few from a neighbor or mix and match for a charming, imperfect look.

Head to the farmers market for fresh, seasonal ingredients. Local produce often comes with less packaging and a smaller footprint. To avoid food waste, plan portions ahead and encourage guests to bring a reusable container for leftovers.

Decor can stay simple and meaningful. A few wildflowers in a jar, cloth napkins, or even hand-drawn place cards made from scrap paper go a long way.

Mother’s Day is about showing love. A low-waste brunch is just one sweet way to do that with less guilt and more good.

Sunset of the Day From Egypt

The Canopy reader Joyce shared this stunning photo taken on the Nile in Luxor, Egypt. Feluccas—traditional wooden sailboats—glide across the water as the sky glows in warm shades of orange and gold. Captured during a January sunset, this peaceful moment feels like stepping into a timeless scene.

Thank you, Joyce, for taking us along on your journey with this breathtaking view.

Have a sunset or sunrise you love? We’d be honored to feature it—send it our way!

Elephant Mom and Daughter Finally Reunite

Elephants are known for their strong family bonds, and this Mother’s Day season, one story reminds us just how powerful those bonds can be. After three years apart, a young elephant named MeBai was reunited with her mother, Mae Yui, in northern Thailand.

MeBai was taken as a calf to work in tourist camps where she gave rides, despite being far too young. Her health declined, and she was eventually moved to the Elephant Nature Park’s ā€œPamper A Pachydermā€ program for recovery and care.

Once she regained her strength, caretakers tracked down her mother over 60 miles away. A team then walked MeBai for four days to reach Mae Yui. When they met, the two elephants stood quietly before wrapping trunks in a long-awaited embrace.

Now, MeBai and Mae Yui are healing side by side. The park hopes to eventually release them into the wild together, where they belong.
