Study Finds Nature Connection Supports Mental Health
When life feels overwhelming, many people instinctively step outside, even for a few minutes. A large global study of more than 38,000 people across 75 countries suggests that instinct may be more meaningful than it seems. Researchers found that people who feel more connected to nature consistently report higher levels of well-being, including greater life satisfaction, optimism, and resilience.
This idea, known as “nature connectedness,” goes beyond simply spending time outdoors. It reflects how strongly someone feels that nature is part of who they are. Across different cultures, ages, and environments, that emotional connection was linked to a stronger sense of purpose, better stress management, and more mindfulness in daily life.
Researchers also found that these benefits appear worldwide, not just in wealthier or more nature-accessible regions. Feeling connected to something larger, like the natural world, may help people stay grounded and cope with uncertainty, offering a simple but powerful way to support mental health.

Sunset of the Day in Oregon
The Canopy reader Mike captured this vivid Oregon sunset, where deep orange and red tones stretch across the sky and settle behind a quiet line of rooftops. The fading light softens the landscape, while low clouds catch the last glow of the day, creating a layered horizon that feels both calm and expansive.
Thank you to Mike for sharing this beautiful sunset! Have a sunset or snapshot you’d love to share? Send it our way for a chance to be featured in The Canopy.

Sustainable Swap: A Simple Laundry Switch That Saves Energy
Washing clothes in hot water has long been the default, but that’s starting to shift. Modern detergents are now designed to work effectively in cold water, using enzymes that break down dirt and stains even at lower temperatures. For most everyday loads, cold water can clean just as well, without the extra energy.
The difference shows up in both environmental impact and cost. Heating water accounts for the majority of a washing machine’s energy use, with some estimates suggesting up to 90% of the energy in a hot cycle goes toward heating. Switching to cold water can significantly cut that energy use, which adds up over time, especially for households doing multiple loads each week.
There’s also a benefit for your clothes. Cold water is gentler on fabrics, helping colors last longer and reducing wear. Hot water still has its place for heavily soiled items or when sanitizing is needed, but for most laundry, cold water offers a simple, low-effort way to save energy while keeping clothes in better shape.

The $60B Anime & Manga Boom Has Escaped Japan
Most people assume anime & manga are Japanese industries. But for the first time in history, international revenue has surpassed Japan’s. TOKYOPOP’s been preparing for this moment for nearly 30 years. They have licensing contracts with giants like Nintendo and Disney, with stories told in 50 countries and 30+ languages. That’s translated to $15M in annual revenue. And it’s just beginning.
