Earth Day’s History Might Surprise You

If Earth Day feels like something that’s always been around, that’s because it kind of has—at least since 1970. But it didn’t start with big festivals or tree-planting campaigns. It started with a U.S. senator, a massive oil spill, and a whole lot of college students who wanted change.

After witnessing the damage of an oil spill in Santa Barbara, Senator Gaylord Nelson decided to try something bold. He asked students to help him organize a national day of action focused on pollution and protecting the environment. On April 22, nearly 20 million Americans took to the streets.

That first Earth Day helped push the U.S. government to pass major environmental laws and create the Environmental Protection Agency. It showed that collective action—no matter how local—can lead to big results.

Now observed in 192 countries, Earth Day is a reminder that change doesn’t always start with policy. Sometimes, it starts with people who care enough to show up.

Is Your Cat Litter Sustainable?

Did you know most cat litter is made from clay or silica, involving mining processes that harm ecosystems and release significant carbon emissions?

Clay litters come from strip mining sodium bentonite, damaging habitats and waterways. Silica litter production demands high energy, increasing greenhouse gases. Both remain in landfills indefinitely, worsening the waste crisis.

But Earth Day is the perfect time to consider eco-friendly alternatives. Plant-based litters offer biodegradable, sustainable options, dramatically reducing environmental impact and waste.

Celebrate Earth Day with Eco-Friendly Litter

Most traditional cat litters are made from strip-mined clay or silica. Both end up in landfills when thrown away and are not biodegradable.

A new natural cat litter called Tailfeather is changing this with their eco-friendly, plant-based, clumping cat litter made from coconut and cassava.

Why coconut? The husk of the coconut absorbs liquid up to 9 times its weight! This makes for a soft, luxurious litter that cats love and is 70% lighter than traditional litter, but also doesn't track and bounce out of the box.

It's fully biodegradable and 100% plastic-free, including the packaging. Tailfeather is delivered conveniently to your door, and each package lasts for 8 weeks, double the amount of other litters.

Make A Difference this Earth Day

If Earth Day had a slogan, it might be ā€œstart small, stay steady.ā€ Think of it like a New Year’s resolution, but for the planet. Whether it’s finally trying that shampoo bar or learning to compost, a single habit can make a lasting difference.

Even everyday changes can add up. Hanging your laundry instead of using a dryer saves energy. Making your own coffee helps cut down on disposable cups—and your monthly budget. Switching to biking for short trips? That’s good for the planet and your heart.

Not sure where to begin? Try a ā€œbuy-nothingā€ weekend, cook more meals at home, or pick one product to stop buying in plastic. These aren’t drastic moves—they’re doable steps with a ripple effect.

You don’t have to overhaul your whole life to live more sustainably. Start with something that fits your routine. Over time, small choices can turn into a lifestyle that feels just as good as it does green.
