Meet The Dogs Helping Save Koalas

Some conservation heroes wear hiking boots. Others wear harnesses and work for a tennis ball. Bear, an 11-year-old Australian detection dog, recently retired after a decade of helping find koalas and other wildlife in need of rescue.

Bear worked with IFAW and the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Detection Dogs for Conservation, where he was trained to smell live koalas high in the trees. During Australia’s devastating Black Summer bushfires in 2019 and 2020, he helped locate more than 100 koalas across burned areas so they could receive veterinary care.

Now, conservation teams are looking for the next dog to follow in Bear’s pawprints. The new recruit will likely work alongside drones and human spotters after bushfires, floods, and cyclones, helping find animals people might miss from the ground. It is a hopeful reminder that protecting wildlife often takes creativity, teamwork, and sometimes one very determined dog with a very good nose.

Sunset of the Day in Ontario

The Canopy reader Beth captured this calming sunset in Quadeville, Ontario, where the soft blue evening sky reflects across the still lake. A quiet dock, tree-lined shore, and gentle clouds make the scene feel peaceful and still.

Beth described the moment as “so calming,” and it’s easy to see why.

Thank you to Beth for sharing this beautiful sunset! Have a sunset or snapshot you’d love to share? Send it our way for a chance to be featured in The Canopy.

Do Fruits And Veggies Need To Be Washed?

Fresh produce is one of the easiest ways to bring more color, crunch, and nourishment into your day. But before those blueberries go into a bowl or that kale lands in a salad, a quick rinse can make your food safer and a little more enjoyable to eat.

Unwashed fruits and vegetables can carry dirt, debris, pesticide residue, and germs from soil, water, animals, or handling. Produce that is eaten raw deserves extra care because there is no cooking step to help reduce bacteria. Berries, leafy greens, melons, and root vegetables can also hold onto more residue because of their texture, layers, or contact with the ground.

The safest habit is simple: rinse fruits and vegetables under cool running water right before eating or prepping them, even if you plan to peel or cook them. Scrub firmer produce like potatoes with a clean brush, and separate leafy greens so water can reach hidden spots. It is a small kitchen ritual, but it helps make all those fresh, plant-filled meals feel a little cleaner, calmer, and more cared for.
