How the World’s Rarest Sea Turtle Came Back

Here’s a comeback worth celebrating. In 1947, someone filmed tens of thousands of Kemp’s ridley sea turtles coming ashore on a single Mexican beach in one day. They were all nesting at once in a mass arrival called an arribada. For a while, it looked like that sight was gone for good. It isn’t.

The Kemp’s ridley had been hit hard by egg harvesting and by turtles getting caught in shrimp nets. By the 1980s, the smallest sea turtle in the world had also become the most endangered. Then people decided to do something about it.

What followed wasn’t one dramatic rescue. Mexico and the United States started protecting the nesting beaches together. Shrimp boats added escape hatches to their nets so trapped turtles could swim free. Volunteers walked their own stretches of sand, keeping watch over nests until the hatchlings emerged. Year after year, more of them reached the water, and there are roughly 7,000 to 9,000 nesting females today.

They’re not fully out of the woods, but a species that almost slipped away is filling those beaches again. That happened because enough ordinary people kept showing up for them. If you find yourself near a nesting beach this summer, there are simple ways to help, like giving turtles plenty of room and leaving the sand cleaner than you found it.

The Sustainable Swap Hiding in Your Shower

Let’s talk about the razor situation. If you shave, you know the drill. The blade goes dull, you toss it, you grab another one from the pack under the sink, and you don’t think about it again. It’s such a small thing that most of us have never really stopped to wonder where it ends up.

Here’s the thing: a disposable razor is plastic and metal fused together, so recycling machines can’t pull the two apart. The nice part is that longer-lasting options skip that whole cycle, since you’re not tossing anything every few weeks. A few worth a look:

• Laser, which thins regrowth over a series of sessions

• Waxing, which lasts for weeks and skips the plastic entirely

• Sugaring, a gentler option made from sugar, lemon, and water

• A safety razor, if you’d rather keep shaving, since the blades are recyclable steel

And honestly, there’s no wrong way to handle your own routine, so this isn’t about doing it perfectly. But next time you’re standing there with a dull blade, it might be worth weighing your options before you reach for the pack. Even changing one part of it keeps a whole drawer’s worth of plastic out of the trash, which feels like a pretty easy win!

Reader Stacy sent us this sunset from a lake near Hayward, Wisconsin, out in the Chippewa Forest area. The water had gone glassy, a lone pontoon was drifting near the far shore, and the sky was easing into that soft orange that only shows up at the very end of a summer day.

There’s something about a lake at this hour. The boats slow down, the water goes still, and everyone sort of stops to watch.
