Students Create AI to Support Healthier Plants
Caring for plants doesn’t always come naturally, but a group of students at Spelman College is working on a tool that could make it feel a lot more approachable. Their project, called PlantGPT, uses sensors and artificial intelligence to help people better understand what their plants need. The idea is simple: give plants a kind of “voice” so they can communicate when something is off.
PlantGPT collects real-time data like soil moisture, light levels, temperature, and humidity. The AI then turns that information into clear, personalized care tips, helping users know when to water, adjust light, or make small changes. While the current setup includes multiple sensors, the team is working to make it more user-friendly and accessible for everyday plant owners.
The students also see potential beyond houseplants. They hope the tool could eventually support small farms or shared growing spaces, where keeping track of multiple plants can be challenging. It’s a thoughtful example of how technology can make sustainable habits, like caring for plants and growing food, feel more manageable and within reach.

Sunset of the Day
The Canopy reader Anna captured this classic ocean sunset as the sun dipped just below the horizon, casting a deep orange glow across the water. The waves roll in steadily, reflecting the fading light while the sky shifts from warm tones to soft blues.
Thank you to Anna for sharing this peaceful coastal sunset. Have a sunset or snapshot you’d love to share? We’d love to see it. Send it our way for a chance to be featured in The Canopy.

Does Your Cat Litter Sit in a Landfill Forever?
Most traditional cat litters are made from strip-mined clay or silica. Both end up in landfills when thrown away and are not biodegradable.
A new natural cat litter called Tailfeather is changing this with their eco-friendly, plant-based, clumping cat litter made from cassava.
Why cassava? It clumps extra hard for easy, clean scooping, clumps lift right out without sticking to the box. It's also much lighter than clay and produces far less dust.
It's fully biodegradable and 100% plastic-free, including the packaging. Tailfeather is delivered conveniently to your door, and each package lasts for 8 weeks, double the amount of other litters.
For the next 24 hours, Canopy readers get a $15 credit on your first order with code Canopy15.

Recreate Pinterest Outfits With Your Own Closet
Spring style often starts with a scroll through Pinterest: saving outfits that feel effortless, fresh, and put-together. But instead of heading straight to checkout, it can be a chance to look at your own closet differently. Recreating Pinterest outfits using pieces you already own is a simple way to refresh your style while reducing waste and spending.
Start by noticing patterns in what you save. Maybe it’s a white button-down with trousers, a blazer layered over denim, or a simple tee with a standout accessory. Chances are, you already have similar pieces. Focus on the overall feel, like color combinations or layering, rather than exact matches, and you’ll find it’s easier than expected to bring those looks to life.
Spring’s unpredictable weather makes this approach even more helpful. Lightweight layers, like sweaters, button-ups, and jackets, can be mixed and matched to recreate multiple Pinterest-inspired outfits without adding anything new. It’s a reminder that sometimes the most satisfying outfits aren’t new. They’re just newly styled.
