Sea Otters Are Helping Save the Ocean Floor

Sea otters aren’t just cute. They’re surprisingly important for the health of our oceans. These small animals play a big role in keeping kelp forests alive, which helps fight climate change.

Kelp forests pull carbon from the air, kind of like underwater trees. But they’re fragile. When sea urchins multiply too quickly, they chew through the kelp and destroy the habitat. Otters keep things in balance by eating the urchins before they take over.

Their eating habits help in other ways, too. Otters also protect seagrass meadows, which store carbon in their roots for hundreds of years. By keeping crab populations in check, otters let the seagrass stay clean and grow strong.

Sea otters once lived all along the Pacific Coast, but their numbers dropped after years of hunting. Thanks to conservation work, they’re coming back, and when they do, the ecosystems around them get stronger too! Helping sea otters means helping the planet in ways we might not always see.

Otters Steal Spotlight From Superstar Couple

When Travis Kelce said he wanted to befriend a wild sea otter, Taylor Swift jumped in to help paint the picture: an otter in need, a heroic rescue, and a forever bond. Monterey Bay Aquarium offered the next best thing: a real-life visit.

The aquarium invited Kelce (and Swift, of course) to meet their rescued otters ahead of Sea Otter Awareness Week in September. These otters (Opal, Ivy, Ruby, and Selka) aren’t just adorable. They help raise orphaned pups and support the health of kelp forests, which store carbon and protect coastlines.

It’s a sweet story with a serious purpose. Sea otters are endangered, and getting people to care, especially through a viral moment, can make a difference.

If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing sea otters up close, you're not alone. You can watch them anytime on Monterey’s live otter cam, no podcast fame required.

Sea Otter Awareness Week

Sea Otter Awareness Week (Sept. 22–28) is the perfect excuse to take a moment and appreciate one of the ocean’s most charming and surprisingly important creatures.

Whether you’ve seen them floating belly-up in a kelp bed or sharing a rock with a buddy, sea otters have a way of making people smile. And while they’re fun to watch, they also play a big role in keeping coastal ecosystems healthy.

Today, about 3,000 sea otters live along California’s coast, but they once ranged all the way from Baja to Alaska. Conservation efforts are helping their numbers grow, but they still need our support.

You can celebrate this week by tuning into an aquarium’s otter cam, reading up on their history, or even sharing your favorite otter fact with a friend. Personally, we’re celebrating by staring at adorable pictures of these little animals!
