Rare Owl Chicks Seen in Poland After 100 Years
While walking through the forest, a birdwatcher in Poland heard something unusual: the call of a Eurasian scops owl, a species not known to nest in the country for over 100 years. He returned with a friend, and after weeks of patient watching, they discovered something incredible: a hidden nest with two baby owls.
The tiny, wide-eyed chicks are the first confirmed evidence that this species is nesting in Poland again. It wasn’t easy to spot them. Just a few seconds of owl calls, some night visits with thermal cameras, and finally, a peek into a tree cavity revealed the fluffy little birds.
Although Eurasian scops owls aren’t endangered globally, they’re rare in Poland. This small discovery is a big deal for conservationists, especially as many owl species struggle with habitat loss. For these bird lovers, it was the moment of a lifetime, and a hopeful sign for nature.

Sunset of the Day
The Canopy reader Anthony shared this early morning view from Garden City Country Club in New York. Framed by dew-tipped leaves and a soft layer of mist, the rising sun glows just above the horizon: quiet, golden, and full of promise for the day ahead.
Thanks to Anthony for sending this in. If you’ve captured a sunlit moment that made you stop and breathe a little deeper, we’d love to see it too!

What To Do With Old Tupperware
That cabinet full of plastic lids and mystery containers? You’re not alone. Tupperware doesn’t last forever, and older versions may not be safe for storing food, especially if they were made before BPA was phased out around 2010.
But instead of tossing them, try repurposing. Cracked or stained containers can hold art supplies, bathroom items, or even become planters with a few drainage holes. Some people get creative and turn them into compost bins, drawer organizers, or even gift wrap.
Still want to get rid of them? Check for a recycling symbol underneath. Many are made from #4 or #5 plastic, which can be tricky to recycle curbside. Drop-off centers may be a better fit.
And if your containers are clean, odor-free, and still in good shape, a local thrift store or neighbor might give them a second life. Just skip donating anything with cracks or wear inside.
