Thursday 5/14: Sponsored by RAD Intel - Sloth rescued, everyday AI, sunset of the day

Thursday

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

Margaret Mead

In today’s issue, we’ll take a look at:

True or False?

A full fridge is more energy-efficient than an empty one.

Florida Community Rallies Around Rescued Sloths

In Sanford, Florida, a group of rescued sloths is getting the kind of care that takes patience, tenderness, and a lot of community support. Thirteen sloths were brought to the Central Florida Zoo after several became seriously ill at Sloth World, and the 10 surviving animals now need a quiet place to recover.

Their care is expected to include about three months of quarantine, along with medicine, food, lab work, and regular monitoring. Zoo officials said those needs cost at least $1,000 a day, with total expenses projected to reach as much as $200,000. The youngest sloth, known as Mr. Ginger, remains in intensive care.

To help, Sanford Main Street partnered with the zoo on a sloth-themed T-shirt fundraiser, which raised more than $3,700 on its first day. It is a hopeful reminder that rescue does not end when an animal reaches safety. Sometimes, healing starts when a whole community decides to care.

How To Use AI A Little More Sustainably

AI can feel invisible, but every search, prompt, and generated image is powered by real data centers that use electricity and water. As AI grows, experts are paying closer attention to that footprint, especially as data center electricity demand is expected to rise sharply in the coming years. That does not mean everyday people need to avoid AI altogether. It just means using it with a little more intention.

One simple place to start is by asking better questions the first time. Instead of sending five scattered prompts, try giving clear context, details, and your goal up front. You can also skip AI for tasks that do not really need it, like simple math, quick reminders, or information you already know.

AI can also be a helpful tool for greener living. Ask it to plan meals around food already in your fridge, compare lower-waste product swaps, build a thrift list before buying new, or suggest ways to reuse items before tossing them.

The most sustainable version of AI may be the one that helps us slow down, waste less, and make more thoughtful choices in the real world.

Sunset of the Day in Maine

The Canopy reader Lois captured this coastal sunset from Lookout Point in Harpswell, Maine, where the last light settles over quiet water dotted with small boats. The sky shifts from pale blue to warm orange near the horizon, while the shoreline and houses catch a soft evening glow.
