Inside London’s Little-Known Fox Rescue Program

Foxes are a familiar sight in London—darting through alleyways, curling up in backyards, or napping on sunlit porches. But life in the city isn’t easy, and when things go wrong, a small group of people steps in to help.

The Fox Project, based just outside of London, responds to calls about injured or sick foxes. They rescue around 1,400 foxes a year, including hundreds of orphaned cubs. Many are suffering from mange, road injuries, or urban hazards like soccer nets and fences.

Volunteers drive through city streets in vans filled with medicine, gloves, and towels. Because of these rescues, many foxes recover, join foster groups, and are eventually released back into the wild.

It’s not glamorous work—sometimes it’s smelly, often it’s unpredictable—but it’s driven by a belief that these wild animals deserve care, too. And even if a fox can’t say thank you with words, watching one dash back into the world is reason enough to keep going.

Sunset of the Day

This sunset came to us from The Canopy reader Deborah, who shared this breathtaking view from Smith’s Creek—part of the intercoastal waterway in Florida.

With golden water, silhouetted docks, and cotton candy skies above, it’s the kind of scene that makes you stop mid-step and just breathe it in. There’s something extra magical about a coastal sunset.

Thanks for sharing this slice of calm, Deborah. Have a sunset that made you pause? Send it our way—we love seeing the world through your eyes.

Endangered Species’ Corner: Sea Turtles

There’s something quietly moving about watching a sea turtle crawl back into the ocean. Last month, 31 of them did just that in North Carolina—thanks to a rescue effort that began during a bitterly cold winter.

The turtles were found stranded along the Northeast coast, too cold and weak to swim. Most were Kemp’s ridleys, one of the most endangered sea turtle species. After months of care at rescue centers in Massachusetts and New York, they were strong enough to return to the water in North Carolina.

Each turtle had a name, like Pegasus, known for gliding through tanks, or Violet, who needed a second round of care after re-stranding. The team even gave her a tracker this time, so they can follow her journey.

Now, they're swimming free off the coast of North Carolina, while another 42 turtles prepare for release later this summer. Their stories are a reminder that even small acts of care—applied consistently and collectively—can bring species back from the edge.
