Did You Know?
A plastic bag is only used for an average of 12 minutes, but how long will it remain in the environment for?
Making Your Workouts Planet-Friendly
The qualities we want in our sportswear - like breathability for sweaty runs and stretchiness for yoga cooldowns - are often thanks to synthetic materials like polyester and spandex. These are made from plastic, with millions of barrels of oil used to make athletic wear every year. What’s more, when we wash synthetic clothes, they release microplastics, which have been found at the furthest reaches of the earth as well as inside our bodies.
It’s time to phase out non-recyclable, plastic gym clothes, so we can boost our endorphins with a workout without taking a toll on the planet. Luckily, there’s a range of options for high-quality workout clothes that contain organic and natural materials, such as:
1. Merino Wool
It might sound more appropriate for a cold winter’s day than a sweaty workout session, but merino wool is actually extremely lightweight and moisture-wicking - plus, it’s biodegradable and regenerative!
2. Organic Cotton
Non-toxic and natural cotton is a great alternative to polyester that won’t pollute the planet.
3. Tencel
Also known as lyocell, this fabric is semi-synthetic and made from cellulose. Swap out plastic for this compostable material that won’t leave a trace.
4. Bamboo
Bamboo clothing naturally regulates your temperature and absorbs moisture, keeping you cool and dry as you work up a sweat.
By opting for these sustainable materials, you’re prioritizing the planet’s health as well as your own. Happy exercising!
Going for Gold in Sustainability
From the Paris Agreement to the Paris Olympics, the city has been in the spotlight over the years when it comes to sustainability. This year, there was a huge push to make the world’s biggest sporting event the most climate-friendly ever, with the goal of cutting emissions by 50% compared to 2012 and 2016.
Paris’ quest to green the Olympics included measures like:
1. Using Existing Venues
Construction creates a huge amount of emissions, so by turning to venues that already existed in the city, Paris was able to reduce its carbon footprint. New venues like The Aquatic Centre were built from sustainably grown wood and included solar panels on the roof.
2. Powered by Plants
Hungry spectators were powered by plants, as Paris set out to double the amount of vegetarian and vegan food on offer in its venues. What’s more, to combat food waste, uneaten food was donated to people in need around the city.
3. Taking Cars Out of the Game
All of the Olympic venues are accessible by public transport, while 88 km of new bike lanes were created around the city. Where possible, electric and hybrid cars were used by Olympic officials.

Walk, Bike, Thrive - The Mental Health Benefits of Cycling and Walking
By choosing walking or cycling over driving, you’ll avoid carbon emissions and help keep the air in your community clean. But as well as being a win for the environment, these transport options can also help you beat the blues.
Walking and cycling release endorphins, which boosts your mood, helps you to relax, and de-stresses your mind. You’ll benefit from a reduced risk of depression and anxiety - so lace up your shoes, get back in the saddle, and walk or pedal your way to a healthier you!
