Rewild Your Backyard
So many lawns in the US are covered in artificial grass, pesticides, or fertilizers, and require huge amounts of water to maintain. In fact, homeowners use 10 times more chemicals per acre than farmers do on crops! What if instead we let our gardens return to a more natural state, encouraging the country’s biodiversity to recover right in our backyard? Here’s how:
1. Think Like a Native
If you plant flowers that are actually suited to your region, they’ll grow perfectly well on their own, with no need for fertilizers. Planting native plants will also help your garden become a haven for wildlife, and purify the air and soil.
2. Stop Mowing So Much
Letting the grass in your garden grow wilder is an easy way to attract birds and insects - plus, you’ll have one less chore on your hands!
3. Leave Rotten Leaves Alone
When branches and leaves decay, their nutrients are reabsorbed by the soil. Resist the urge to tidy up and let nature’s cycle run its course.
4. Build a Pond
Ponds attract wildlife like frogs, dragonflies, bugs, and turtles. They’ll also capture carbon dioxide, acting as your very own home carbon sink, and cool down the temperature of your garden.
5. Feed the Earth
Make your own at-home compost with food scraps from your kitchen, or if you’re buying some, make sure it’s organic and peat-free.
Creating Water From Thin Air
Over 1.8 billion people around the world are affected by drought, a crisis that’s only going to escalate with climate change. But one incredibly exciting solution has recently been developed by a Kenyan entrepreneur, Beth Koigi. She’s figured out a way to provide communities in her home country with permanent access to drinking water, something 50% of the population lacks.
Koigi’s invention acts as a filtration system that pulls water from the air - seemingly out of nothing. Plus, it runs on solar power, so it can be used in areas that lack electricity and is of course eco-friendly. It’s currently being installed in stores around Kenya, supporting local economies by providing an extra income stream for store owners.
