How Copenhagen Uses Nature to Prevent Floods
More than a decade ago, a sudden storm flooded Copenhagen so severely that streets turned into rivers and damage reached nearly $2 billion. That moment pushed the city to rethink how it handles water. Instead of fighting floods with taller walls and bigger drains, Copenhagen chose a gentler approach: designing the whole city to absorb water like a sponge.
A “sponge city” uses green spaces (parks, trees, gardens, even special pavement) to soak up rain naturally. Many of Copenhagen’s projects look like art or playgrounds, but quietly manage stormwater. One public square, shaped with rolling concrete hills, doubles as a rain basin during storms. Parks have been lowered to hold millions of gallons of water, and some streets are designed to guide heavy rain into safe areas instead of basements.
For bigger storms, the city uses underground tunnels that move excess water straight to the harbor. It’s a mix of nature-based solutions and smart engineering, built to handle the heavier rainfall climate scientists predict.
Cities around the world are now studying Copenhagen’s model. It’s proof that flood protection doesn’t have to be harsh or hidden. It can make a city greener, calmer, and more resilient all at once.

Sunset of the Day in South Carolina
Terry shared this golden-hour view from a campground in South Carolina, where the setting sun lit up the sky and cast a warm reflection across the water. The tall trees frame the moment just right: tranquil, vivid, and grounded in nature.
Thank you to Terry for sending in this peaceful lakeside view. Have a sunset or snapshot you’d love to share? We’d love to see it. Send it our way for a chance to be featured in The Canopy.

Meal Prep Ideas That Help the Planet
Meal prep is great for saving time and money, and it can also be a surprisingly easy way to cut kitchen waste. The goal is planning ahead so more of what you buy actually gets used. A little intention goes a long way toward shrinking food waste, which is one of the biggest sources of trash in U.S. households.
Start by looking at what you already have. Building meals around the ingredients hiding in your fridge or pantry keeps food from being forgotten and tossed. Choose a few flexible recipes (soups, bowls, stir-fries) where you can swap in whatever produce is on its last leg. Buying in-season ingredients at local markets is another simple way to reduce your footprint and support farmers.
When it’s time to prep, keep it low-waste: reuse jars or containers you already own, cook big batches of grains or beans for the week, and freeze leftovers before they spoil. Even saving veggie scraps for homemade broth makes a difference.
Sustainable meal prep isn’t about rigid routines. It’s about thoughtful habits that help you eat well, save money, and waste less.
