How One Baby Penguin Is Bringing Hope to a Species in Peril
At the Denver Zoo, a tiny African penguin chick has overcome the odds, making a "remarkable" recovery after a serious respiratory illness. Hatched on October 15 to parents Guja and Keni, the chick faced a rocky start, requiring round-the-clock care in the zoo's Small Animal Intensive Care Unit. Thanks to dedicated treatment, supplemental oxygen, and expert care, this fluffy survivor is now thriving.
African penguins are classified as Critically Endangered, with wild populations having plummeted by more than 98% over the last century. Habitat loss, climate change, pollution, and other human impacts continue to threaten this species, making every new hatchling a vital step toward their recovery. With fewer than 20,000 left in the wild, each penguin born offers renewed hope for the species’ future.
The Denver Zoo is no stranger to conservation efforts. Its African Penguin Point habitat mimics the natural environment of Southern Africa, complete with heated rockwork and cozy burrows. The zoo’s team also works with Cape Town’s Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds to rehabilitate and release penguins back into the wild.
For now, the resilient little chick is back behind the scenes, growing steadily and charming caretakers with its calm, curious personality. Soon, it will join the rest of the flock, continuing its journey as a symbol of hope for endangered species everywhere.
Join us in celebrating this incredible win for conservation!

Eco-Friendly Hacks to Cut Your Energy Costs
If you're looking to lower your energy bill without making drastic changes, small adjustments can make a big difference. Here are a few simple hacks to save energy and money:
Switch to LED bulbs – They use less energy and last longer than traditional bulbs, cutting down on electricity usage.
Adjust your thermostat – Set it a few degrees lower in winter and higher in summer to save on heating and cooling costs.
Seal gaps in windows and doors – Prevent drafts and keep your home’s temperature stable to reduce energy waste.
Unplug unused appliances – Electronics and chargers left plugged in can still draw power. Unplug them when not in use.
Use energy-efficient appliances – When it’s time to replace old appliances, look for Energy Star-rated options to save on long-term energy costs.
By making these simple changes, you can significantly reduce your energy bill while also contributing to a more eco-friendly home. Start small and see how these adjustments add up to both savings and a greener lifestyle.
