Making Your Coffee Habit More Sustainable

A daily cup - or two, or three - of coffee is all that stands between many of us and being closer to a zombie than a functioning member of society. With coffee playing such a large role in our lives - from the first cup in the morning to a cafe date with friends - how can we make sure our caffeine fix doesn’t take a toll on the planet? Here are some ideas:

1. Use a French Press or Pot

Yes, coffee pods and a fancy machine can be the ultimate convenience - especially when your eyes are half closed first thing in the morning - but those aluminum pods create an immense amount of waste. With a press or pot, all you need is coffee and hot water to get your fix.

2. Look For Fairtrade Brands

Choose Fairtrade-certified coffee, which gives farmers a fair price and helps support the communities around the world who grow the coffee we love.

3. Buy a Reusable Cup

If you’re buying coffee on the go, be sure to have your own cup to hand. Plastic takeaway cups typically can’t be recycled.

4. Compost Your Grounds

Don’t just throw your coffee grounds in the trash! As well as getting you up and going, coffee works wonders for helping the plants and vegetables in your garden bloom, so add the grounds to your compost heap.

Salmon are Swimming Free Once Again

The biggest ever dam removal project in U.S. history is now nearly finished. This means the Klamath River near the California-Oregon border will once again run freely, clearing a path for salmon just in time for spawning season. This has been celebrated by the Karuk Tribe, for whom the salmon is sacred, and who have spent 25 years pushing for the dam to be removed.

Dams were initially built on the Klamath River by a power company in order to generate electricity. But, while hydro is a renewable source of power, it can have a damaging effect on local wildlife. In this case, it prevented the movement of the salmon - it’s in their nature to return up the river to the place they were born, so an inability to do so drastically reduced the fish population. Now, they can swim freely again, just like fish in the rivers surrounding the 2,000 dams that have been removed in the last 25 years.

A Kinder, More Planet-Friendly Bug Spray

Insects are an important and valuable part of your garden’s ecosystem, but if they’re eating your plants, they can be incredibly frustrating. So, how can you tackle your bug problem without harsh and toxic chemicals?

Luckily, by making your own all-natural bug spray, you can get rid of pesky insects without contributing to chemical pollution. Here’s the recipe

  • 2.5 tablespoons of vegetable oil

  • 2.5 tablespoons of pure liquid soap (not detergent)

  • 1 gallon of warm water (filtered or tap - but not hard water)

Mix everything together in a spray bottle. Once mixed, the solution will be effective for one day. To make sure you won’t inadvertently harm your plants, do a patch test first!
