Tuesday 5/13: Sponsored by Deal Maker - How trees help cities, sunset of the day, extinct wolves make an amazing comeback

Tuesday

“Live gently on this Earth, so others may live too.”

In today’s issue, we’ll take a look at:

True or False?

Most bees live in hives and produce honey.

Scroll to the bottom for the answer.

The Hidden Superpower of Trees in Cities

If you've ever noticed how a tree-lined street feels cooler than a sidewalk in full sun, you're not imagining it. Trees are one of the most effective and natural ways to combat the “urban heat island” effect—when cities get much hotter than surrounding rural areas due to all the pavement, buildings, and lack of greenery.

According to the EPA, shaded areas can be 20–45°F cooler than unshaded ones. Strategically planting trees around buildings doesn’t just lower temperatures—it can also cut energy bills by reducing the need for air conditioning.

But cooling is just one benefit. Trees also clean the air by absorbing pollutants like nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide while releasing oxygen. Their roots and surrounding soil help filter stormwater, reducing runoff and easing pressure on water systems.

Trees even cool the air in another way—through evapotranspiration, a process similar to sweating. As moisture evaporates from leaves, the surrounding air cools.

Whether it’s a lone street tree or a whole city park, every patch of urban green helps make hot days more bearable—and our cities a little more breathable.

Offset Your Carbon Footprint (and Make a Profit)

What if your next investment could help the planet and your portfolio? With World Tree’s 2025 Eco-Tree Program, it can.

As North America’s largest grower of Empress trees, World Tree plants hardwoods that grow 3X faster than traditional trees, sequester massive amounts of carbon, and regenerate farmland. Just one acre offsets your carbon footprint for an entire decade.

Even better? Each acre you invest can also return up to $20,000 within 8-12 years. So by investing, you’ll make a meaningful environmental impact and share in profits, linking your portfolio to a sustainable future. Don’t miss out – lock in the discounted price before 5/30.

Sunset of the Day

This magical photo comes from The Canopy reader Rachel, who captured a beam-filled forest scene that almost feels like a moment out of a dream. If you look closely, you'll spot a deer quietly taking in the light.

Moments like this remind us how wild and peaceful nature can be, all at once.

Have a sunset (or sunrise!) that made you pause and breathe a little deeper? Send it our way—we love seeing the world through your lens!

Meet the Wolf Pups With Prehistoric Roots

Three pups that look like something out of a fantasy story were just born in Texas—and they’re making history. Scientists used ancient DNA from fossils to bring back the dire wolf, a species that disappeared about 13,000 years ago.

The pups—Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi—were born to surrogate dogs after researchers used DNA from a fossilized tooth and skull. They now live on a large wildlife preserve, where they’re being closely cared for and studied.

This project is part of a growing effort to understand how we might use new technology to help today’s endangered species. The team is also working with Native American leaders, who see wolves as an important symbol of nature and balance.

While “de-extincting” animals raises big questions, it also brings some hope. The tools used to bring back the dire wolf could help us protect species that are still hanging on—especially those threatened by climate change or shrinking habitats. For now, these fluffy pups are a sign of what science—and teamwork—might make possible.

Final Thoughts:

One acre = $20,000? That’s the upside of World Tree’s 2025 Eco-Tree Program. Get a piece of the harvest profits from trees growing 3X faster than traditional hardwood – and potentially offset your carbon footprint for a decade or longer. Act fast to invest at a discounted price.

Reflections:

🌎 True or False: False! Around 90% of bee species do not live in hives and don’t make honey at all.

🌅 Sunset Of The Day: The sun can provide the most beautiful photography. That's why we're eager to see your favorite sunrise or sunset photos. Reply to this email with your best sun-based pictures for a chance to be featured!
