130 Beached Whales Rescued In Australia
In an inspiring turn of events, wildlife officials and volunteers successfully returned 130 stranded pilot whales to the sea in a dramatic rescue operation near Dunsborough, south of Perth! Unfortunately, climate change is exacerbating the problem, with more whales becoming beached due to entanglement in fishing nets and having to hunt closer to shores due to overfishing and ocean warming impacting their prey.
Initially, 160 whales had beached in Dunsborough, but thanks to the tireless efforts of rescue teams, the majority of these majestic creatures were saved. While whale strandings are a complex phenomenon that often happen naturally, there is no doubt that human activities are leading to increased occurrence. Local rescue groups are key in quickly getting the creatures back into the water if possible, but we can all help too!
Supporting sustainable fishing practices reduces overfishing and helps maintain the balance of marine ecosystems. Reducing our plastic use and properly disposing of waste can also prevent entanglement and ingestion of debris by marine animals. Lastly, participating in beach clean-ups, advocating for marine protected areas, and supporting organizations dedicated to ocean conservation can make a significant difference.
This rescue operation not only highlights the challenges faced by marine life but also underscores the importance of continuing to protect and preserve our ocean's inhabitants. By being mindful of our actions and their impact on the ocean, we can all help protect the majestic creatures that call it home!
The Effect Of Ocean Exposure On Our Mental Wellbeing
Living near the coast isn't just about enjoying beautiful views—it's also a boon for mental health. Research shows that proximity to bodies of water can significantly reduce mental health issues and stress. For instance, war veterans suffering from PTSD have found relief through ocean exposure and activities like running along rivers, proving that nature truly is a great medicine!
Beyond observing the landscape from afar, engaging in water-related activities such as surfing or swimming has been proven to help people cope with mental health issues, fostering self-confidence and self-reliance. A large study even discovered that childhood exposure to blue spaces, like oceans and rivers, is linked to better well-being later on in adulthood. This early connection with water seems to pave the way for happier and healthier lives.
And if you don't live near the water, don't worry! Even watching videos of water landscapes and other natural scenery can positively affect your mind. So next time you’re stressed or overwhelmed, take a walk by the beach, visit a local lake, or just turn on some nature videos. Embracing blue spaces can be a simple yet powerful way to enhance your mental well-being!

Are You Overwashing Your Clothes?
There’s a good chance you’re overwashing your clothes, which wastes water and leaches microplastics from synthetic fabric into our waterways. A study from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, found that even eco-conscious people wash their clothes too often due to the fear of being perceived as unclean.
So, how often should we wash our clothes? Here’s a quick guide:
Denim jeans: Every 10 wears.
Socks and underwear: After each wear.
Bras: Every two to four wears.
Athletic wear: If exercising after each wear, otherwise every few wears.
Coats: Once or twice a season.
Wool sweaters: Every five to ten wears.
If you spill something or get a small stain, try spot cleaning before unnecessarily throwing the whole thing in the wash. Also, remember to always wash cold! It’s a huge misconception that clothes will be cleaner if washed with hot water. It just uses up more energy per wash!
By washing less frequently, you can save resources, reduce pollution, and extend the life of your clothes. So next time, think twice before tossing that barely worn shirt into the laundry basket!
