How Miami Is Reimagining Urban Green Space

In Miami, a stretch of land beneath elevated Metrorail tracks is being turned into something much more inviting: a 10-mile park trail and nature corridor. The Underline is transforming 120 acres of underused urban space into a place where people can walk, bike, gather, cool off in the shade, and reconnect with nature in the middle of the city.

The project runs from the Miami River downtown to the Dadeland South station, linking eight Metrorail stops and several neighborhoods along the way. Its paths are designed to make walking and cycling feel safer and easier, giving residents another way to move through Miami without relying only on cars.

The green side of the project is just as meaningful. The Underline includes native plants, thousands of trees, restored habitats, rain gardens, and stormwater features that can help support pollinators, reduce heat, and manage flooding. With playgrounds, art, seating, and community spaces woven in, it is a hopeful example of what can happen when cities look at overlooked places and imagine something better.

Sunset of the Day in Hilton Head Island

A Canopy reader captured this peaceful sunset at Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort, where golden light stretches across the water beneath a canopy of sprawling tree branches. The quiet shoreline, still chairs, and soft reflections give the scene a relaxed coastal feel, like the perfect place to pause at the end of the day.

Simple Picnic Ideas For Sunny Days

A summer picnic doesn’t need a perfect basket, a matching blanket, or a full afternoon of planning. At its best, it is simply a reason to slow down outside, feel the sun for a bit, and turn an ordinary meal into something a little more memorable.

For a solo picnic, keep it simple with a pita sandwich, hummus, feta or goat cheese, olives, and sun-dried tomatoes or artichoke hearts. Bring a book or notebook, and let the quiet be part of the plan. For two, a small charcuterie-style spread with crackers, cheese, olives, dried fruit, chocolate, and a few favorite savory bites makes it easy to linger without much cooking.

With kids, the best picnic is usually the least fussy one. Pack easy options like nut butter and banana sandwiches, clementines, mini cheese, popcorn, dates, and plenty of water. Add a soccer ball, a magnifying glass, bug spray, or a kite, and the afternoon can unfold on its own. A few reusable containers and cloth napkins can also make the whole picnic feel a little lighter, sweeter, and less wasteful.
