Sun, Sand, and Sustainability

Whether youā€™re relaxing with a book, playing volleyball with your friends, or taking your kids to splash in the sea, we hope you get the chance to hit the beach this summer. But while you soak up the sun, remember that the fun we have at the beach can unfortunately take a toll on the marine life who call these places home. Follow these tips for a more sustainable beach trip, and help keep these beautiful places clean and safe.

1. Leave Nothing Behind

Thereā€™s nothing that ruins the view of a stunning coastline like a pile of trash - and as well as spoiling the natural beauty, litter can trap and strangle animals like dolphins and turtles. Bring a bag with you to the beach and fill it with your rubbish, then take it with you and toss - or recycle - once you get home.

2. Limit Your Plastic

The toys your kids use to build sandcastles and the inflatables they bob along on are derived from fossil fuels. If you can, borrow from friends to reduce your use, and if a hole pops up in their rubber ring, see if you can patch it up before you throw it in the trash.

3. Sustainable Suncare

Donā€™t forget to pack your sunscreen, but check the label first, as some suncare products use chemicals that can harm marine life. Luckily, we donā€™t have to sacrifice our skin for the planet: look for bottles that are labeled reef-safe, and even better if it has recycled or recyclable packaging.

4. Swimwear

Swimwear is typically made from synthetic materials derived from plastic - thatā€™s what gives it its stretchiness and durability. Sadly, our love for exploring the ocean can have a toxic effect on marine life, as our bikinis break down into microplastics. Look for swimwear thatā€™s at least partially made from natural materials, while your next best bet is recycled plastic. And, after your beach day, wash your swimwear in cold water, which will reduce the shedding of microplastics.

Your Chocolate Habit Just Got More Sustainable

Most of us will admit to having a sweet tooth, but all that sugar doesnā€™t just damage our enamel - it harms the planet, too. So a new scientific discovery is great news for the chocolate enthusiasts among us: scientists have developed a new way of making our favorite snack that replaces sugar with plant matter.

Usually, only the cocoa beans and pulp are used to create chocolate, and the rest goes to waste. But Swiss scientists have discovered that they can mash up the leftover pod and husk to make a gel that works great as a replacement for sugar. As a result, the process saves on land and water use, as well as emissions. And itā€™s a win-win for eco-conscious chocolate lovers, as the final product is healthier for us, too. Thereā€™s really no reason to feel guilty about enjoying a sweet treat now and then.
