If everyone in the U.S. skipped meat for one day, it would save enough water to supply New York City for ____.

Why Tokyo’s Skyscrapers Are Covered in Greenery
Tokyo is tackling city heat in a unique way—by turning rooftops into green spaces. Since 2001, a law has required many new and renovated buildings to include gardens on their roofs. This effort has transformed more than 5,700 buildings, covering over 1.8 million square meters in lush greenery.
These green roofs do more than look pretty. They can lower rooftop temperatures by up to 25 degrees Celsius and reduce indoor heat, cutting the need for air conditioning. That means lower energy bills and a big win for the environment. Plus, they help absorb rainwater, preventing flooding, and provide homes for birds, bees, and butterflies.
Tokyo’s green roof law has inspired other cities like New York and Singapore to take similar steps. Unlike voluntary programs, Tokyo’s law ensures real change. The city now aims to expand these efforts, with a goal of covering 10 million square meters with green spaces.
By blending nature with urban life, Tokyo is proving that small changes—like adding plants to rooftops—can make a big difference in creating cooler, more livable cities.

Sunset of the Day
Today's stunning sunset comes from The Canopy reader Gail, who captured this serene moment from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The golden glow of the sun peeks through moss-draped oaks, casting a peaceful light over the water. A lone bird perched on a branch adds to the stillness, a reminder of nature’s quiet beauty at dusk.
Thank you, Gail, for sharing this breathtaking view with us! Have a sunset that inspires you? Send it our way—we’d love to feature it!

How Lemons Can Replace Everyday Products
Lemons aren’t just for lemonade—they’re one of the most versatile items in your kitchen. From cleaning greasy dishes to freshening up laundry, this citrus powerhouse can replace many household products with a natural, eco-friendly alternative.
If your fridge smells a little off, place a sponge soaked in lemon juice inside to absorb odors. Simmering lemon peels in water can also freshen up your entire home, while a few slices near your trash can or litter box can help neutralize bad smells.
Need a non-toxic polish? Cut a lemon in half and rub it over stainless steel or copper to remove grime. You can also mix lemon juice with baking soda to tackle stubborn stains on kitchen surfaces.
For laundry, a splash of lemon juice in the wash can brighten whites—no bleach needed! It also helps keep sliced fruits and veggies fresh, preventing them from browning. And if you have a sore throat, a simple mix of warm water, lemon juice, and honey can be just as soothing as store-bought cough syrup.
With so many uses, lemons are a simple way to clean, freshen, and brighten your home—naturally!
