A Valentine’s Day That’s Full of Love (and Less Waste)
Valentine’s Day is all about celebrating love—whether it’s with a partner, friends, or yourself. If you enjoy traditional gifts like flowers and chocolates, go for it! But if you're looking for ways to make the holiday a little more eco-friendly, there are plenty of simple swaps that don’t take away from the romance.
For Gifts: Flowers and chocolate are classic Valentine’s staples. If you’re picking up a bouquet, look for locally grown flowers or a potted plant that lasts longer. For chocolates, brands with fair trade or sustainable sourcing make a great choice. And if you love giving something personal, handwritten notes or homemade treats are thoughtful ways to show you care.
For Date Night: Whether it’s a fancy dinner out, a cozy night in, or an outdoor adventure, any celebration can be made a little greener. If you’re cooking at home, try adding a plant-based dish to the menu. If you’re going out, consider supporting a local restaurant with sustainable practices. And if you love experiences, stargazing, hiking, or even visiting a botanical garden can be just as special as a traditional dinner.
For Decorations & Extras: Candles, cards, and festive touches make the day feel special. Opt for soy or beeswax candles, and look for cards made from recycled paper—or better yet, write your own! If you love the look of festive décor, try reusable decorations or even fresh flowers instead of balloons and plastic trinkets.
At the end of the day, Valentine’s Day should be about what feels right for you. Whether you go big or keep it simple, even small changes can make a difference for the planet—without taking away from the love and joy of the day.

How to Choose Meat & Seafood That’s Better for the Planet
Look for Labels – Opt for sustainably certified options like MSC (seafood) or Certified Humane (meat).
Know Your Sources – Choose local, organic, and pasture-raised meats to support ethical farming and reduce emissions.
Go Lower on the Chain – Seafood like sardines and mussels have a smaller environmental impact than larger fish like tuna.
Small swaps can make a big difference! Being mindful of where your food comes from helps protect our planet’s resources.

Endangered Species Corner: Darwin’s Fox
In 1832, Charles Darwin came across a small gray fox while exploring Chile’s Chiloé Island. This curious creature, later named Darwin’s fox, played a role in shaping his revolutionary ideas on evolution. Today, Darwin’s fox is one of the rarest animals on the planet, and its survival depends on our efforts to protect it.
This endangered species is only found in Chile, living in the forests of Chiloé Island and a few mainland areas. With fewer than 1,000 individuals left, Darwin’s fox faces threats from habitat destruction and diseases spread by domestic dogs. Conservationists are working hard to preserve its shrinking population and the forests it calls home.
Capturing a glimpse of this shy animal is no easy task. Wildlife photographer Kevin Schafer recently managed to photograph one with help from local scientist Jaime Jiménez. He found the fox near a dense rainforest, but it quickly darted into the shadows, true to its reputation as one of the most elusive creatures in the world.
Protecting Darwin’s fox isn’t just about saving one species—it’s about preserving an entire ecosystem. By supporting conservation efforts, we can ensure this rare animal continues to thrive in its natural home for generations to come.

Reflections:
🌎 True or False: False! Many roses are imported and require pesticides and high water use—locally grown flowers or potted plants are better options.
