Tuesday 5/20: Sponsored by Winona - Hedgewood highways, non-dairy milk, and moon garden

Tuesday

“The environment is where we all meet; where we all have a mutual interest; it is the one thing all of us share.”

Lady Bird Johnson

In today’s issue, we’ll take a look at:

True or False?

Some mushrooms can break down plastic in landfills.

Scroll to the bottom for the answer.

What Are “Hedgehog Highways”

In the U.K., hedgehogs are getting a boost from an unlikely source: holes in backyard fences. Known as “hedgehog highways,” these openings let the small creatures travel safely between gardens as they search for food, water, and shelter.

Since 2000, the hedgehog population has dropped by a third due to habitat loss and modern landscaping. Smooth fences, paved yards, and even garden ponds can all become hazards. By adding a 5-inch square hole at the base of a fence, people are helping hedgehogs move freely again.

As of 2021, over 120,000 highways connect an estimated 240,000 gardens—roughly one percent of all U.K. yards. The idea is simple, but it’s gaining momentum thanks to community groups, schools, and even sports clubs.

This kind of fix is easy to copy wherever you live. If you’re in a neighborhood with fenced yards and local wildlife, a small passage and some safe shelter (like a wooden box with straw) could make a big difference. Sometimes the most effective conservation tools are the ones we can all pitch in on, even right from our own backyards.

The Coffee Trend That’s Good for the Planet

If you’ve ordered a latte lately, chances are you’ve heard this: “Oat milk okay?” And you might’ve said yes, without even thinking twice. But that swap is doing more than just changing the flavor.

Turns out, oat milk is one of the most sustainable options out there. Compared to dairy, it takes much less water to produce and generates fewer greenhouse gas emissions. It also blends well with coffee and foams like a dream, helping it become a go-to for baristas and home brewers alike.

Oat milk’s success opened the door for even more eco-friendly options. Milks made from peas, hemp, pistachios, and even potatoes are popping up in cafĂ©s and grocery stores. Each one offers something a little different for your coffee and the planet.

Whether you’re loyal to your oat latte or curious to try something new, it’s never been easier (or more delicious) to make your coffee routine a little greener.

How To Plant A Moon Garden

If your yard has a shady patch that never quite feels lively, a white flower garden might be just what it needs. Known as a “moon garden,” this setup uses all-white blooms to reflect light and create a calming, glowy vibe—especially at dusk.

Start with easy flowers like impatiens or petunias, which thrive in low light. Add taller plants like jasmine or climbing hydrangea for structure, and mix in evergreens to keep things looking full through winter.

White gardens can be surprisingly low-effort. Since you’re often planting long-lasting perennials and shade-loving species, you won’t need to swap out plants constantly. Plus, choosing native plants helps pollinators and reduces water use.

You don’t need a green thumb or fancy tools—just a few plants, some good soil, and a corner that could use a little brightening. It’s a small, peaceful project that feels good to come home to.
