As of 2021, over 120,000 highways connect an estimated 240,000 gardens—roughly one percent of all U.K. yards. The idea is simple, but it’s gaining momentum thanks to community groups, schools, and even sports clubs.

This kind of fix is easy to copy wherever you live. If you’re in a neighborhood with fenced yards and local wildlife, a small passage and some safe shelter (like a wooden box with straw) could make a big difference.
