These Dogs Are Protecting Australia’s Tiny Penguins
On a small stretch of coast in Warrnambool, Australia, the world’s tiniest penguins were almost wiped out. Their nesting ground on Middle Island had become an easy target for foxes crossing over during low tide, until a few loyal dogs stepped in. The unlikely protectors? Maremma sheepdogs, originally bred in Italy to guard livestock.
The idea began in 2005, when conservationists trained two puppies, Eudy and Tula, to live among the penguins. Their presence alone was enough to scare off predators, giving the colony a chance to rebuild. Within a few years, the population grew from fewer than ten to hundreds.
Today, a new generation of Maremmas (named Mezzo, Isola, and Oberon) carries on the mission. Their success has inspired conservation programs worldwide, proving that sometimes the best environmental solutions come on four paws.

Why Your Dog’s Snacks Deserve a Sustainability Upgrade
Living sustainably doesn’t stop at what we eat, it extends to how we care for the ones we love most, paws included.
That’s why we were excited to discover PawCo, a company rethinking what dog meals can be. Their Magic Cookies are made with just five clean, functional ingredients — no fillers, no artificial colors, and no hidden additives. Each crunchy, plant-based biscuit is hand-crafted (yes, by real people!) to support your dog’s wellbeing, from digestion to skin and joint health.
The variety box includes all five recipes — Original, Gut Health, Heart Health, Skin & Coat, and Hip & Joint — so your pup can enjoy a balanced rotation of flavors and benefits.
It’s a thoughtful, sustainable approach to treating: wholesome ingredients, gentle on the planet, and proof that better choices can start right at the treat jar.

Sunset of the Day
The Canopy reader Jackie shared this fiery, streaked sky that looks like the sunset painted its own masterpiece. The colors ripple across the water, blending soft pinks, oranges, and deep purples into one of those views you can’t help but stop and stare at.
Thanks to Jackie for sending this in. If you’ve captured a sunset that made you stop and breathe a little deeper, send it in for your chance to be featured!

A Greener Take on Costumes, Treats, and Décor
Halloween doesn’t have to mean mountains of candy wrappers and plastic décor. With a little creativity, it can be just as festive, and far more sustainable. From recycled decorations to homemade treats, celebrating a greener Halloween is about small swaps that make a big impact.
Skip the plastic pumpkins and transform what you already have: jars become lanterns, cardboard turns into spooky cutouts, and real pumpkins can shine as natural centerpieces. Repurpose old clothes or thrifted items into one-of-a-kind costumes. Even homemade face paints or props can make the celebration more personal and eco-friendly.
For treats, think bulk candy, baked goods, or snacks in paper packaging. Compost leftover pumpkin bits, use cloth bags for trick-or-treating, and ditch disposable tableware for reusable dishes. These easy steps help keep Halloween fun, creative, and kind to the planet.
