You Can Email a Tree in Melbourne
Imagine walking past your favorite tree on your morning commute and being able to send it a quick note. In Melbourne, Australia, that’s actually possible. The city created an interactive online map where every public tree appears as a dot. You can zoom in, click on a specific tree, and see its species, age, and health (plus a link to email it directly).
The original goal was practical. Residents could report broken branches or signs of stress so the city’s Urban Forest team could respond quickly. But something unexpected happened: people started sending thank-you notes. Since launching, more than 10,000 emails have poured in, many simply sharing appreciation for shade, beauty, or a daily moment of calm.
The project is part of Melbourne’s plan to increase tree canopy from 22% to 40% by 2040. It’s a small, creative reminder that when we’re invited to notice nature, we’re far more likely to protect it.

Sunset of the Day
Winter has a way of transforming even the simplest backyard into something magical. In The Canopy reader, Barbara’s photo, fresh snow blankets the ground while the sun filters through bare branches, casting long blue shadows across the yard.
Thank you to Barbara for sharing this peaceful winter moment. Have a sunset or snapshot you’d love to share? We’d love to see it. Send it our way for a chance to be featured in The Canopy.

5 Billion Pounds of Cat Litter Ends Up in Landfills Each Year
Most traditional cat litters are made from strip-mined clay or silica. Both end up in landfills when thrown away and are not biodegradable.
A new natural cat litter called Tailfeather is changing this with their eco-friendly, plant-based, clumping cat litter made from coconut and cassava.
Why coconut? The husk of the coconut absorbs liquid up to 9 times its weight! This makes for a soft, luxurious litter that cats love and is 70% lighter than traditional litter, but also doesn't track and bounce out of the box.
It's fully biodegradable and 100% plastic-free, including the packaging. Tailfeather is delivered conveniently to your door, and each package lasts for 8 weeks, double the amount of other litters.
For the next 24 hours, Canopy readers get a $15 credit on your first order with code Canopy15.
Thank you to Tailfeather for sponsoring The Canopy.

The Viral TikTok Gallery Wall
If you’ve ever grouped several framed pieces together on one wall (photos, prints, or artwork), you’ve created a gallery wall. Traditionally, it’s been a curated collection of matching frames or coordinated art arranged to make a visual statement. But lately, that classic setup is evolving into something more personal.
Instead of filling walls with store-bought prints, people are framing meaningful pieces: family photos, handwritten notes, children’s drawings, even small heirlooms. Some are placing fabric behind their frames to add texture and warmth. A scrap of vintage textile or lace can soften the display and make it feel layered rather than staged.
If you’re tempted to try it, start with what already matters to you. Mix meaningful items with artwork you love, and don’t worry about everything matching perfectly. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s creating a wall that feels like your story.
