True or False?

Turning off your computer at night saves more energy than leaving it on sleep mode.

A Local Program Helping Homes Use Less Energy

In parts of California, a simple knock on the door is leading to meaningful change. A nonprofit called Rising Sun Center for Opportunity offers free “green house calls,” where trained young workers visit homes to help improve energy and water efficiency. It’s a practical way to make sustainability feel more accessible, especially for communities that may not always have access to these resources.

During these visits, residents receive small but impactful upgrades like LED light bulbs, power strips, weather sealing, and water-saving devices. These changes can help lower utility bills while also reducing energy and water use. The program also creates job opportunities, training young people, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, for careers in clean energy.

What makes this approach stand out is how it connects people and solutions in a direct, personal way. By bringing support straight into homes, it removes barriers and makes it easier for more communities to benefit. It’s a reminder that sometimes the most effective climate solutions are the ones that meet people where they are.

Sunset of the Day in North Carolina

The Canopy reader Jan shared this vivid North Carolina sunset, where layers of deep orange and soft pink stretch across the sky behind a line of winter trees. The silhouettes of branches and evergreens frame the view, giving the scene a quiet, neighborhood feel as the day winds down.

It’s a simple moment, but one that turns an everyday setting into something worth pausing for.

Thank you to Jan for sharing this neighborhood sunset. Have a sunset or snapshot you’d love to share? We’d love to see it. Send it our way for a chance to be featured in The Canopy.

Does Your Cat Litter Sit in a Landfill Forever?

Most traditional cat litters are made from strip-mined clay or silica. Both end up in landfills when thrown away and are not biodegradable.

A new natural cat litter called Tailfeather is changing this with their eco-friendly, plant-based, clumping cat litter made from cassava.

Why cassava? It clumps extra hard for easy, clean scooping, clumps lift right out without sticking to the box. It's also much lighter than clay and produces far less dust.

It's fully biodegradable and 100% plastic-free, including the packaging. Tailfeather is delivered conveniently to your door, and each package lasts for 8 weeks, double the amount of other litters.

Welcome Spring Into Your Routine

Spring can feel like a fresh start, but that doesn’t mean everything has to change overnight. After months of winter routines, easing into the new season slowly can feel more natural and sustainable. Instead of overhauling your habits, small shifts, like opening your windows, stepping outside for a few minutes, or adjusting your daily rhythm, can help you reconnect with the change in season.

One helpful approach is to break things into smaller steps. Tackle one area at a time, whether it’s cleaning a single drawer or spending a bit less time on screens in the evening. Gradually adding more time outdoors, swapping in lighter foods, or choosing seasonal produce can help your body and mind adjust without feeling overwhelmed.

Even small ritual changes can make a difference. Switching to a lighter moisturizer, drinking more water, or simply letting in more sunlight can subtly shift how your space and routine feel. It’s less about doing more and more about moving with the season at a pace that feels good to you.
